Think good thoughts for Daisy
On Thursday afternoon, we went off to Switzerland and left Daisy with our friends for the weekend. Friday morning I got a call from them saying that she had run away. I came back on the afternoon train to look for her and to put signs up all over the area. No sign of her until this morning when I opened the back door and found her lying there, badly wounded. We whisked her off to the vet, and as far as we can guess she was attacked by wild boar, and possibly hit by a car too. She must have been passed out for a couple of days and when it started raining this morning she made her way back. She has several wounds all over her body, the worst one being on her front leg, where it is lacerated to the bone, with an opening of about 6 inches. The biggest worry is the infection, it seems this probably happened on the first day she got out, and now 4 days later it's looking pretty bad. Hopefully she reacts well to the antibiotics and they are able to stitch her up and save her leg. So we're pretty sad around here, happy that she's back with us and that she will be ok, but so very sad to think what she's been through.
In other news, like I said, it's raining here! A good steady rain, at times hard but all in all the vineyards are getting a good soak. We did lots of plowing last week with a pretty nifty implement that a friend loaned us, I've got some great pictures I'll put up very soon! Thanks for your thoughts for our pup! She's very brave and strong, I know she'll be ok, but it's been a pretty awful experience.

I'm so sorry for your dog and I can imagine your worries till she came back. We had several times this kind of problem in the past, when our dogs had been stuck in official (and unofficial) traps in spring. Normally they were seriously hurt on the front leg and sometimes had received a bad stroke on the head, when peoples tried to kill them to free their (fox and badger) traps.... As we protested very loudly for several years (and perhaps because introduction of European laws in France), they gave up the trapping - and now badgers have again joined wild boars in the wines in autumn... it's not always only idyllic to live in the countryside.
Best wishes for your pet - and what a good thing to have done the plowing before the rain!

Terribly sorry to hear about Daisy's ordeal. It pleases me to know that you would interrupt your trip for her. Our dog is much more than a pet and I'm sure Daisy is the same for you. I always enjoy the posts and photos that include her. (I am, after all, Chateau Bon Chien. :-) Heartfelt wishes from our home to yours for Daisy's quick physical and emotional recovery...

I'm really sorry to hear about Daisy, and I hope she's recovering well. Hate to be one of those people for whom everything is about them - but I am what am, I guess, cause this makes me think that I'm very happy about our decision regarding our Aussie, Zoey, during an upcoming vacation. We talked abut getting a housesitter, because we didn't want her to miss her daily run and lots of pets, but in the end we decided that she would be better off at the cage-free kennel where she spends the occasional weekend. We know from experience that if we're around or even if we're gone for several hours, we can leave the gate and every door in the house wide open, and she won't budge. But if we're gone, I worry that she'll go looking for us. In the kennel she won't be getting much attention, but she'll be hanging with friends, and we'll know that she can't go anywhere.
